Got this email today from "Dudley Brown" from the National Association for Gun Rights:

Our Second Amendment rights are hanging by a thread.

At a press conference immediately following the Connecticut shooting, President Obama made his intentions clear: He's prepared to ram his anti-gun agenda down our throats.

The White House even announced this week that Obama will be actively supporting a new "Assault Weapons" Ban and ending ALL private firearms sales by requiring a “background check” government permission slip.

And sadly, the national media is more than willing to help him get his wish . . .

MSNBC anchors are calling for outright gun "confiscation!"

Even prominent Republican backers like Fox News founder Rupert Murdoch is loudly calling for new gun control schemes, and Fox News commentator Bill Kristol is calling for "serious hearings."

Calling for hearings is the biggest insider cop-out in Washington.

These "appointed committees" are always dominated by leftist academics most of whom have never held a firearm in their lives.

You think they'll stand strong when the anti-gun machine turns up the pressure?

But what's worse is the establishment gun lobby is nowhere to be found, deleting their Facebook page in an effort to run and hide from the fight.

We will agree to disagree here. Universities here in the states are strongholds for leftist ideology, and I will assume that is also in foreign schools.

IMHO games like "Grand Theft Auto" and movies that keep pushing the bar higher and higher for gore and violent content absolutely do desensitize viewers at different levels. In some cases they may even be negative influences for the simple minded and mentally ill.

Following a statement along those lines the Executive Vice President of the NRA is being eviscerated for suggesting that these could influence certain individuals. Based upon some of the unhinged responses I've seen regarding his speech it appears that there will not be an educated or serious discussion or study of the problem. As a staunch defender of the US Constitution, handing over my guns is no more an option than allowing the government to control my speech. There are millions of people in this country who feel the same way that I do.

I just finished watching the press conference which has got the wing nuts coming unglued. When and if you watch this you will see the very unhinged people who need to never own a gun demonstrate their disrespect, lack of manners, and refusal to hear anything that counters their beliefs. I applaud Wayne La Pierre for this eloquent and respectful response to the violence that occurred in Connecticut. His proposal goes beyond what any elected officials have suggested, asking for immediate protections in our schools.

Please Steve, many of us are "staunch defenders of the US Constitution". The meaning of the 2nd Amendment (note amendment... I guess the document wasn't perfect) varies widely depending on your viewpoint. You can't drive a car until a certain age, and you have to prove you are competent. You can't drink before a certain age. You can't practice medicine without a license. Yet we hand over weapons designed to kill to just anyone with no restrictions? I don't agree with Plad on "handing over" guns, and that isn't going to happen no matter what. But we can place meaningful and sensible restrictions on owning an instrument of death.

See my response above. Eloquent??? Respectful??? The parents of these students have spoken out - he spat in their faces. It was an absurd suggestion, very expensive, and only covers the schools when in session. An armed guard or officer will be the first casualty in any similar situation. They won't have a Dirty Harry at every school... more like a Barney Fife. And Barney will be target #1.
The NRA, as usual, skirts any responsibility for our gun crazy society. They are more culpable than any video game.

I wouldn't particularly disagree with you there. Kids certainly weren't so 'disturbed' when I was one. We didn't have all the 'kill 'em all' games and films that we have now so there might be something in it.

If you are going to look at number of guns per capita in different countries then maybe you'd better look at the amount of f***ed up violent video games in America that pretty much train your kids as a shooting simulator would. And at ages young enough to make them numb to violence. You think those graphic violent games are as prevalent in those other countries? I doubt it.

Hollywood, in their movies, depict random senseless violence which also affects the young minds.

When you pound all this stuff into young person's mind's what did you think was going to happen?

But what about all the kids that play those games and don't flip out? How do we explain that? It's always a minority, a very small minority that does this. Are we expecting the 99 and 9/10's percent of the people to bend and change their lives because less than 1 percent caused a problem?

That's not what happened at Sandy Hook. This was a disturbed young man that needed help. There is zero evidence that video games of movies influenced him. We do know that he went to a shooting range with his mother. Why was he exposed to guns and encouraged by his mother? Guns were his weapon of choice most likely because he adopted his mother's gun fanatic ways.
An assault rifle is just that - for assaulting someone.
