![]() Seriously - I live at the foothills of a mountain. I have javelinas, coyotes, and the occasional rattlesnake here. I've been here 14 years and have never needed my gun for "protection" from these vicious predators, LOL. I'm not saying to NOT have it for protection, but in reality the vast majority of people will never use it.

That's a good question. Did he say that before he was shot or afterwards?
I was there in DC at a conference at the same hotel a few days after he was shot. It was a very strange feeling for me because it brought back vivid memories for me from 18 years earlier in 1963. My father had taken me out of school to see JFK and his motorcade after he landed in Houston on Thursday, November 21, 1963, on the way to a speaking event here in Houston. We didn't live far from the airport and we got a pretty good spot to view the passing motorcade on Broadway. My next door neighbor was one of the HPD motorcycle offices assigned to escort the motorcade and he nodded to me as he passed us by. Next stop was Dallas. Anyway, since the Washington Hilton was still in a state of shock over the shooting on the sidewalk outside the hotel; extra precautions were being taken everywhere. A guest speaker at another event at the hotel, Sen. John Tower, who I had seen earlier in the day in his office, was kept out of the public's view behind black curtains until he reached the podium. He was sober at the podium but later, when he left, it was reported that he fell down on the grand staircase of the hotel. Rumor was that by the time he left he was feeling no pain. Anyway, it was a pretty strange time because none of us knew how seriously injured Reagan was by one of the ricocheting bullets. The shooter had used strange bullets that I had never heard of before and they had fragmented upon entry. It was only later we read that the .22 cal bullets had aluminum and lead azide explosive charges inside. Anyway, it was a strange time. My wife and I walked everywhere and she was pregnant with our second child. The cherry blossoms around the monuments were late that year. Only a few had bloomed and it was so very cold and windy while we were there. Still, the whole town was on edge but breathed a sigh or relief when Reagan gave a little speech from the hospital room (I think). He was a tough old guy and at that time not even a whisper over his ailment had hit the airwaves. Before we left we took the subway train all the way to Arlington and spent the day there at the cemetery and at Lee's old home on the grounds. I did make it over the see the Eternal Flame too. Good old Reagan. After he recovered he had to try and explain Oliver North, arms sales, and the Contras. Like I said, seeing Reagan brought back all kinds of memories.

Doesn't matter whether it's either, it's a right, and I will continue to exercise right regardless of what lawmakers or politicians do. Sometimes I feel more want than need, and other times more need than want. That's called freedom of choice. You should give it a try sometime. What school children? My rights nor wants put anyone at risk. I am John Q. Public who you see in many places across America. So unless you are breaking in my home, holding up an establishment that I might be present in, or possibly attempting to kidnap a child you will never know that I am armed and prepared to turn some scumbag's day upside down. Apparently you don't see how ridiculous your inference is about keeping children safe. Where's the outcry for tougher sentencing and better monitoring of the mentally ill? It is directly spelled out in the USC that I have the right to carry a firearm. Geeze it made #2 on the list in the eyes of our founding fathers. I trust that they made the right decision. I understand the crime rate in Brittain is 4 - 5 times higher than in the US. I guess we see how that socialist experiment worked out over there. Armed and properly trained law abiding citizens make our streets safer and reduce the number of crime victims. And, in many cases these thugs do not tie up our justice or penal system because they are victims of their own stupidity.

Great post GS. I'd like to emphasize the "people of good will" part. I couldn't agree more. But people of good will do not go on shooting sprees, rob, rape, kidnap, murder, or sell drugs. That good will is something that can be quite elusive these days.

There is some speculation that some of the wild hogs in this country share DNA with Russian hogs. It has been noted that the Russian hogs have a higher propensity for aggressive behavior.

I doubt I will ever shoot someone and I hope I never have to. But to protect myself or my loved ones I might. My wife asked me once, "What would you do if it was a woman that was threatening my life or your's and you had a gun?" I told her I honestly didn't know. Then she asked, "What if it was a kid?" I told her again I honestly didn't know. I hope I never have to find out either. I told her that if I had to shoot I would prefer it be at a zombie.

I don't think that javelinas (peccary family) can mate with anything else. But feral hogs and Russian boars are much closer together and cross breedings have been reported with both long bristle and short bristle boars and they can mate and breed all year long. They are aggressive but that may also be because they have poor eyesight.
